The Chicago horticultural community has gathered in support of the Chicago Excellence in Gardening Awards. University of Illinois Extension: Cook County has stepped up very generously, contributing staff time and Master Gardener volunteers throughout the year. For the awards ceremony, they sponsored the venue–at the beautiful Garfield Park Conservatory–as well as swag bags, photos and programs.
Shedd Aquarium donated staff time and provided meeting space for the many committee meetings. They also added generously to the swag bags and assembled the metal awards signs that were printed by the Forest Preserve District of Chicago.
The Chicago Flower & Garden Show provided meeting space, printed CEGA posters and displayed them at the Garden Show, provided space for other publicity, and publicized the awards in a variety of ways. Others who publicized the awards in their organizations and social media include Chicago Community Gardeners Association, Advocates for Urban Agriculture, and the Chicago Park District. The Mike Nowak Show with Peggy Malecki and Natural Awakenings Chicago magazine provided press coverage for the awards; creation and maintenance of the website, databases and facebook page; graphic design for signs and certificates as well as ads, posters, and other publicity; and coordination of entry and judging. Chicagoland Gardening Magazine and Greenmark Public Relations also helped with publicity.
Of course, the judges deserve a big thanks as well. They put in a lot of time–traveling, interviewing, making judgments and decisions. It’s not an easy job, and these people deserve our appreciation: Pam and Patrick Barry, Barbara Clark, Julie Emerick, M.J. Garnier, Breanne Heath, Lisa Hilgenberg, Valerie Kehoe, Peggy Malecki, Mike Nowak, Christine Nye, Julie Taylor, Sylvia Taylor, Susan Vanderhulst
